What comes out of "Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson's mouth should come as no surprise to those who have watched him preach over the last several years. The self-proclaimed Bible-thumper is not shy when it comes to his feelings on a number of hot-button issues from abortion to homosexuality.
Here's what he's had to say about that and other issues when speaking across the country:
On hunting ( from a YouTube video shot in 2009): "Sounds like to me we have orders from headquarters [heaven]: If it walks, crawls, flies or swims, kill 'em and eat 'em, right?"
On abortion ( from a YouTube video shot in 2009): "It is the most heinous, pitiful, wicked thing I can think of, to tear fetuses from their mothers’ wombs and just go on by. Fifty million [abortions] -- We’re going to have to pay for that, as a nation."
On the government and what’s wrong with America ( from a YouTube video shot in 2009): "America’s problem is not financial or educational. Don’t let them kid you… America’s problem is a spiritual one. You know it and I know it. You say, 'What happened to Wall Street?' It’s a bunch of thieving going on – that’s what happened to them. What’s wrong with our government? There’s a bunch of lying thieves up there that’s in control of your country. No doubt about it. They never get enough money. We just keep shoveling it in there, wondering where it’s going."
On the meaning of life ( from a YouTube video shot in 2009): "The animals, we can whack ‘em and stack ‘em. But us? There’s a plan for us. He [God] puts us under a code knowing we’re going to violate it. Didn’t make us violate, we chose to. Nobody twisted my arm when I used to get drunk. Nobody was making me be a whoremonger. That’s just who I was… I was a heathen and didn’t realize the trap as I was in."
On being patriotic ( from a YouTube video posted in 2010): "We’re Christian first, or you can’t be a patriot... It’s impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible."
On homosexuality ( from a magazine article in December): “It seems like, to me, a vagina —as a man — would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”
On sin in general ( from a magazine article in December): “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men... Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers — they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”
On wives ( from a YouTube video shot in 2009):"They got to where they're getting hard to find, mainly because these boys are waiting ‘til they get to be about 20 years old before they marry 'em. Look, you wait ‘til they get to be 20 years old the only picking that’s going to take place is your pocket. You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16. They’ll pick your ducks." Robertson adds: "Make sure that she can cook a meal. You need to eat some meals that she cooks, check that out. Make sure she carries her Bible. That’ll save you a lot of trouble down the road."
On race ( from a magazine article in December): “I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash. We’re going across the field.... They’re singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.”
Following Robertson’s brief suspension in December, the family released a statement thanking fans for their support and apologizing for the tone of – but not the core beliefs behind – Robertson’s comments regarding homosexuality.
“While some of Phil’s unfiltered comments to the reporter were coarse, his beliefs are grounded in the teachings of the Bible… Phil would never incite or encourage hate. We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith, which is his constitutionally protected right.”
The "Duck Dynasty" family has yet to make a comment to HLN but did speak out on Fox News Tuesday night.
"We’re just glad to be back to work. A&E and us are fine,” said Willie Robertson, the 41-year-old son of Phil Robertson. “It’s a new year. We’re ready to break in the new year and start all over again.”
