Gummy Bears: Created by Bonn, Germany, by candymaker Hans Riegel in 1922. Riegel and his sons, Hans -– who passed away Tuesday -- and Paul ran the family business, Haribo. The name is a combination of the first two letters in "Hans," "Riegel" and "Bonn." The elder Hans came up with the Gummy Bear idea because gelatin candies were popular in Germany at the time and he figured creating them in the shape of tiny bears would be a hit with children. Good guess.
