Congress gets paid. Nearly 800,00 federal workers get furloughed.
And so goes the haves and have-nots of the federal government shutdown, which will make (relative) winners and (mostly) losers of millions of Americans, as Congress is unable to agree on a spending plan which has been tethered by Republicans to include changes to Obamacare.
Short n' sweet: OK, here's what happens when the govt. shuts down
Ironically, the landmark health care legislation itself stands to be one of the winners here. It's funding is not tied to the congressional budget process. So while large swaths of the federal government are struck down and crumble all around it, Obamacare will remain standing.
But from military families to small business owners and from children excited for a day at the Air & Space Museum to their stock-owning parents, a large cross-section of America will be impacted directly or indirectly by Congress' inability to agree on a plan to fund the government.
