Influenced by the eccentricity of Japan, he decided to re-create some of the characters from the show -- as 1980-90s "Portlandia"-style hipsters.
Wrobel tells HLN that he wanted to contribute to the show's fan art -- which there is a lot of -- but he wanted to stand out. He says that an '80s & '90s feel for the "Game of Throne" characters came naturally to him: He grew up in that decade, which holds some of his best memories.
"I grew up with 'Fresh Prince,' 'Saved by the Bell,' 'The X-Files,' was listening to Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and was buying cereal boxes just for the crappy toys inside," Wrobel tells HLN.
Of course, he also wanted to see "what a fantasy show like 'GoT' would look like in a more contemporary period."
The illustrations first appeared on his blog, which also hosts his renderings of other film and TV show characters.
