Trayvon Martin encountered neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman while walking back home from a convenience store February 26, 2012. Authorities say Zimmerman called 911 to report a suspicious man inside his gated community. When police arrived, they found Martin’s lifeless body dead from an apparent gunshot wound. Zimmerman was bleeding from parts of his head and back, a police report said.
Zimmerman, 29, has now been charged with second-degree murder in the 17-year-old's shooting death. Zimmerman waived his right to a "stand your ground" pretrial immunity hearing. Zimmerman's attorneys will now present a self-defense case, as Zimmerman claims that Martin attacked him first.
