Someone out there must love movies about terrifying mothers, because people flocked to theaters in droves to see creepy horror flick "Mama" last weekend. The movie raked in an impressive $28.1 million, which proves that we're more fascinated than ever with stories that just might give us nightmares.
Directed by Andres Muschietti and presented by Guillermo del Toro, the film tells the tale of two orphaned girls whose mother was murdered by their father. After being left to survive alone in the woods for five years after a car crash, they are rescued and brought to a welfare center for care, but their constant mentions of "Mama" set the people around them on edge. Soon enough, strange things start to happen ... and all you can do is clutch your seat and hope it doesn't get too ugly.
Of course, terrifying moms are nothing new to the movie scene. They've been terrorizing their sons and daughters on celluloid for decades. We revisit some of our favorites in today's gallery.
