Does he look like a "baby Bruce Willis" to you? Or maybe the most "ridiculously good-looking surgery baby" on the Internet?
His name is Joey Powling and he has a rare congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF).
Doctors spotted the condition while mom, Sarah Powling, was still pregnant. So they came with a plan that included open heart surgery when Joey turned 3 months old.
About five days out of surgery, Sarah snapped a shot of little Joey. In it, you can see the large incision on his chest and stomach and what would soon become his signature smile.
Sarah’s brother posted the photo to Reddit.com with the caption, "My three month old nephew just had open heart surgery. Chicks dig scars, right?" And the rest, you could say, was Internet meme history.
Joey’s granduncle says the photo got more than 1 million likes on a site in the United Kingdom and thousands of awesome comments across the Web calling Joey "a baby Bruce Willis," a baby that is “manlier than me,” “The Successor to The Most Interesting Man Alive," and the “ridiculously good-looking surgery baby” (this is the one that has seemed to stick!).
Mom says she was shocked by all the attention.
"It's a little strange but really cool,” she told her uncle (who works for the Lowell Sun). “When he was in the hospital, I'd get on Facebook to see what people were saying. It helped get me and Joe [Joey’s dad] through it all. I took that photo because it was the first time they uncovered the whole scar. Joe was playing with him, and I just wanted to get a picture of the scar, and he started smiling."
Sarah hopes to use Joey’s newfound Internet fame to spread awareness of TOF. They’re having bracelets made up saying “Joey hearts you” and “Don’t turn blue, get a clue.”
