New York started the trend earlier this year with seats that fold into beds and bed that turn into tables. Now, San Francisco may be hopping onboard the “micro-apartments” train. Currently, the minimum square footage required for a living space is 220 feet (or 290 total with bathroom, kitchen and closet space). Now, there’s an ordinance aimed at shrinking that down even more.
If the Board of Supervisors passes the ordinance, an efficiency apartment of 150 square feet (220 total) would meet the building code requirement. San Francisco officials who support the plan argue the tiny apartments will help create a more affordable housing option geared towards the Bay Area’s single population. Right now, the proposed units’ starting rent is estimated at $1,200. Currently, CNNMoney estimates the median rent at $1,951. the steep prices are only behind New York’s. Other estimates have the average rent for a studio apartment at an even higher rate than that.
