New claim 25 years after teen’s mysterious disappearance

Seventeen-year-old Joe Helt was last seen alive on the night of January 16, 1987. He was leaving a party attended by about two dozen teens at an abandoned ski lodge in Cragsmoor, New York with three other young men. The three later told police that Helt left them behind to walk home alone when their car got stuck in a ditch during a snow storm.

Search efforts in the following days were hampered by bad weather and rough terrain, Ellenville Police Chief Phil Mattracion told HLN, but they failed to turn up any sign of the high school student. 25 years later, a former classmate has come forward with new information that a private investigator says could provide a break in the case.

Tracey McSwain Smith, a 40-year-old South Carolina woman, reportedly said she was the “Karate Kid” before she allegedly slapped a police officer, and tried to bite her in the arm, HLN affiliate WSPA reported.

Smith reportedly told police she huffed gasoline before her arrest. She was charged with 3rd-degree assault and battery.

Pediatrician accused of ‘waterboarding’ daughter

A Delaware pediatrician and his wife were arrested after their 11-year-old daughter told police she was punished by “waterboarding,” according to a Delaware State Police news release.

On July 12, authorities said they received a 911 call from a neighbor of Dr. Melvin Morse and his wife Pauline Morse, after their 11-year-old daughter ran to the neighbor and said her father grabbed her by the ankle, dragged her across a gravel driveway and began spanking her, police said.

Country music star Randy Travis was arrested and charged with DWI and felony retaliation after police said they found him lying on a roadway naked, apparently smelling of alcohol. Police said Travis threatened to fatally shoot highway patrol troopers after he was taken into custody, CNN reported. Travis was released from jail after an acquaintance posted his $21,500 bail. CNN was unable to reach Travis or his representative for a comment.

Edward Marunowski, a 47-year-old Ohio man, was arrested after police said he dialed 911 “nearly 70 times within a few hour span disrupting the dispatch center and emergency services,” according to the Eastlake Police Facebook page.
