Despite thousands of utility workers hustling around the clock, an estimated 1.7 million people were still without power early this morning. They are struggling to cope with stifling heat without air conditioning. Many have no water. What's worse, the weekend storms took down so many trees and power lines, staggering numbers of people across the country may not get any relief for days.

Friday! If you are among those who love Fridays: hip hip! Hooray!

Personally I'm so raggedy tired by Friday that my husband calls them "Meany Meade Fridays". Between you and me it's more because he doesn't get his hiney home earlier just that one day, given that we see each other just Friday evening, Saturday, and half of Sunday each week. On the other hand: it's better to miss each other than to get sick of each other. Ha!

You bet we have all the headlines you care about this morning, like:

• The Colorado wildfires are bullying more people out of their homes with everything left to lose.
• A new diet drug gets a 'yes' from the FDA
• Chores make men happy (excellent!)

But the story I want to give you a heads up on is one that will have an immediate and long-term impact on nearly all of us:
