Salute to Captain Rod Richardson

This is a salute from Steve Buitron to his friend Captain Rod Richardson.

Steve writes:
My friend, Captain Rod Richardson, and I were second career law students together at Syracuse University. Rod had served in the Army in the 80's and always regretted getting out. After law school graduation Rod got a great job as a patent attorney in the Washington, DC area; he was making great money, but with two wars waging, he often talked about going back into the Army. While working in DC Rod met a high-ranking Army officer and Rod was able to get himself an age waiver – he was nearly 50 – and get into the Army Reserve. Rod was accepted into and successfully completed OCS and JAG training and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Reserve. Rod recently completed a tour in Iraq and is now serving in Afghanistan. I am so proud to call him my friend. At an age when most are looking forward to retirement Rod left a comfortable high-paying job to serve in two war zones. To me he is the consummate American hero.

Spring Break storms in Florida tomorrow

Here’s a look at the problems for tomorrow’s travelers (there will be many!)

First, the big rain and storm maker across the SE and Mid Atlantic from today will be rolling into the NE. I’m thinking major delays are possible at the NYC/Philly/DC airports, in the afternoon, and then it changes to snow for interior New England and NY State. Winter storm watches are up, and a good 1 to 1½ feet of snow is a possibility in those regions. I’ll have the radar for the worst spots.

Singing on the historic 'Birdland' stage

Many thanks to the viewers and colleagues who came out to see me sing at the historic Birdland Jazz Club in NYC (although I sang country not jazz). HLN friends Jane Velez-Mitchell, Joy Behar and even buddy Richard Lui (now at MSNBC) were there and even backed me up on one special song. You can see the whole show by clicking the play button above.

Where will tomorrow's storms be?

Hey everybody, here’s a quick line on the weather for tomorrow. The heavy rain across the SE from today will be well gone, but more storms will develop upstream overnight tonight. OK will most likely be seeing a strong round of storms early Tuesday, and the I’m watching for some severe weather over the Gulf Coast tomorrow afternoon ahead of a warm front. The NE will still be breezy and cool Tuesday but cool. More much-needed rain will hang around FL too.

Out West, I’m watching another storm cycle on off the Pacific tonight, so heavy rain and some mountain snow is in the forecast for the Pacific NW. Those are the major weather headlines, I’ll have the details on "Morning Express" early tomorrow (Tuesday) morning! If it’s anything like today, I’ll be stifling an allergy sneeze all morning. See ya then.

Bob Van Dillen's "flizzle": Not added to the Oxford English Dictionary

Muffin top, LOL, OMG and tin foil hat – all new words in the Oxford English Dictionary. I actually have a "tinfoil hat travel mug" filled with actual letters from, um, "fans" on my desk, so it’s about time that word made it in! The word I want to see in there is 'shizzle', a word that should be a mix of showers and drizzle. 'Flizzle' would be mix of flurries and drizzle. Probably not going to make it in there.

More rain and storms on the way for the West coast this weekend. The storm from yesterday is over OR, CA, WA and into the Rockies today, with another one edging in for tomorrow and a third for Sunday. The end result will be about 1-3’ of snow in the highest elevations of CA and NV, with about 3-5” rain along the coast and valleys. There are flood advisories and warnings posted in the region, and I’ll show you the radar.

Tax breaks for generous Americans

With about a month to go before taxes are due... you want to make sure you get what you are entitled to. So Morning Express personal finance anchor Jennifer Westhoven wants to highlight some of the overlooked deductions out there.

You don't have to make a big donation to charity to claim a tax deduction. If you itemize... you can deduct even small donations. Maybe you donated some clothes to goodwill or took some food to the local food bank. You can also deduct your expenses for volunteer work including 14-cents a mile to get there.
