Nor'easter slams victims of Sandy

A treacherous mix of snow, ice, bitter cold and high winds from a Nor’easter are slamming the victims of Superstorm Sandy.  As of Wednesday night, there were still more than 600,000 people without power now facing dangerously cold temperatures.

Jane Velez-Mitchell spoke to investigative journalist Rita Cosby who was in the hard-hit New York borough of Staten Island.

A Staten Island woman and her young son describe how they were rescued off of their roof during Super Storm Sandy.  She tells Deb Feyerick and Jane Velez-Mitchell that she lost everything and will not be able to rebuild.  Her son says he thought he was dreaming because that couldn't be happening in New York.

Animal shelter in NYC in desperate need

Animal shelters are struggling to clean-up the damage from Superstorm Sandy. Tiffany Lacey is the Executive Director of Animal Haven, a shelter in downtown New York that has been without power since Monday.

Tiffany has been caring for 30 dogs and 30 cats in the shelter by herself. Low on staff and supplies, she worries what will happen if the power doesn’t come back on soon.

Micah Kaplan lives in the East Village in New York City, an area that was still without power on Thursday night.  Michah’s beloved dog Arthur went missing during Sandy.  He is desperately trying to reunite with Arthur is asking everyone to keep an eye out for him.

Stranded in Hoboken

Jordan Hutt is stranded inside his apartment in Hoboken, New Jersey.  He says some areas in Hoboken are sitting under 5 feet of water. Officials say there could be as much as 500 million gallons of dirty water flooding the streets of Hoboken.  They also warn of numerous power lines down in the floodwaters creating a very dangerous situation.

Seaside Heights resident: "complete destruction"

Keith Paul from Seaside Heights, New Jersey tells Jane Velez-Mitchell that “it is complete destruction” there. He says the ocean and the bay met over the barrier island where Seaside Heights was.  Paul says some houses were just swept into the ocean.

Residents 'plucked from rooftops'

Rescue teams are going door-to-door in some New Jersey towns as floodwaters remain high.  A levee burst in New Jersey caused severe flooding in areas that were not under evacuation orders. 

Brian Todd reports that people are being rescued and in some cases, they are “plucked from the rooftops."

West Virginia is seeing snow from Superstorm Sandy.

Sandy brings snow to Appalachians

Superstorm Sandy is hammering the East Coast with winds, rain and flooding, but the storm is bringing snow to the Appalachian region. Reed Timmer, the star of Discovery Channel's Storm Chaser, spoke to Jane from West Virginia.
