Jane Velez-Mitchell

Jane Velez-Mitchell takes a stand on the biggest topics of the day that people across the country are buzzing about.

Beyoncé made me do it

Beyoncé made me do it

I did it.  I did what some might call the impossible.  For 22 days I went vegan… and I liked it.  Not all of it, and I’ll explain that, but overall I would highly recommend it.

I’ve worked with HLN’s resident vegan, Jane Velez-Mitchell, for nearly six years.  She’s been a vegan for 18 years so I knew it could be done, but it wasn’t until I watched Beyoncé perform at the Grammy Awards that I decided to take the plunge.  I saw on Instagram that she and husband/rapper Jay Z had tried 22 days vegan not too long before this cameo and my hope was to look like Queen B at the end of it.  That didn’t happen, but a girl can dream, right?

Rauch, former president of retail grocery chain Trader Joe’s, is trying to do more than just use food that would be wasted -- he's trying to completely change the way we handle our food both at home and in stores.

Former Vice President Al Gore recently became a vegan.  The Washington Post reported that Gore gave up animal products a few months ago.  If so, he follows his old boss former President Bill Clinton in adopting the vegan lifestyle.

The report made us think about other famous vegans out there.  And the list may surprise you.  Jane Velez-Mitchell will have more on this story Wednesday night at 7pm ET on HLN.

Here's how you make it:

FDA: Trans fat in processed foods unsafe

FDA: Trans fat in processed foods unsafe

The FDA no longer recognizes partially hydrogenated oils, or artificially produced trans fats as safe. That means that food companies may be forced to use healthier ingredients.  There are plenty of alternatives but which ones are actually healthy?

Jane Velez-Mitchell spoke to Keri Glassman a nutritionist from the new Upwave on HLN show Cook Your Ass Off to find out more.

The eggs of the future!

The eggs of the future!

It is a food revolution that could save millions of animals and the planet.  Bill Gates is one of the influential people behind a concerted effort to find new, more effective ways to feed the world.  One of the companies he is backing is called Hampton Creek foods, the creator of Beyond Eggs, a plant-based egg substitute that will look and taste just like eggs. Not only that, but Beyond Eggs is also more nutritional with zero cholesterol.

Josh Tetrick CEO and Founder of Hampton Creek Foods explains what Beyond Eggs is and why it could change everything.

A brand new egg?

A brand new egg?

In the United States alone about 9 billion farm animals are raised and killed for food every year, most of them in factory farm conditions. Now, one of the smartest men on the planet, Bill Gates, who helped bring us the computer revolution wants to revolutionize our eating habits. Recently Bill Gates posted this on Facebook: "We need to start thinking about the future of food if we are going to feed 9 billion people in a way that does not destroy our environment."

He's picked three companies that could change everything! One of them is Hampton Creek Foods. Instead of factory farmed egg production they are creating a new egg! And their product Beyond Eggs is a game changer.
