Suspect in kids' slayings waives court appearance

The South Carolina man suspected of killing his five children waived his right to his first hearing Monday morning, the Lexington County clerk of courts office said.

In a brief filed by his legal counsel, Timothy Jones Jr. said he had been advised by his attorneys not to appear, in part because it “is entirely unnecessary and will undermine my ability to receive a fair trial,” according to CNN affiliate WIS. The brief reportedly goes on to say, “Since this hearing is for the sole purpose of parading me in front of the media, it is my wish to waive my appearance.” WIS reports he is currently on suicide watch and being kept away from other inmates.

Arrest in mysterious death of Alfred Wright

Arrest in mysterious death of Alfred Wright

Officials with the U.S. Attorney’s office in Texas have announced an arrest in connection with the death of 28 year old Alfred Wright.  Authorities say Shane Hadnot will be charged with conspiracy involving distribution of cocaine resulting in the death of Wright.  The death of the married father of three has been a mystery since he disappeared.  Wright’s family believes his death was a murder which was later covered-up by local officials.

In November 2013, Wright was having car trouble so he pulled into a liquor store and called his family to come get him.  Shortly before they arrived, Wright’s wife says she tried calling him just after 6 p.m. and heard “heavy breathing as if he were in distress of some sort.”  When Wright’s parents got to the liquor store the clerk told them Wright, “All of a sudden put his cell phone in his sock and took off like the truck was gonna blow up.”  She would not comment on what caused Wright to run, saying only, “He left of his own free will.”

The jury has reached verdict in the porch shooting murder trial.  After about 8 hours of deliberation, the jury announced their decision, finding Theodore Wafer guilty on all three counts in the shooting death of Renisha McBride.

19 year old Renisha was shot in the face and killed after knocking on Wafer’s door, presumably looking for help after she crashed her car.  The 55 year old airport maintenance worker took the witness stand in his own defense, saying he was in fear for his life when you he was woken up around 4:30a.m. by pounding on his front and side doors.  He claimed he couldn’t find his cell phone to call for help so he grabbed his shotgun and went to investigate.  Wafer told the jury he didn’t know if a man, a woman or several people were outside his Detroit area home.  He claims he shot a faceless figure who came out of the darkness.

It’s a frantic race to find a missing Jenise Wright, 6, in Washington State. Wright vanished this weekend from her family’s trailer park home and today the FBI joined the search.

Police say Wright’s parents are cooperating with the investigation, but new information has surfaced about Jenise’s father, James Wright. About 14 years ago Wright was accused of child molestation of two girls, ages 8 and 14. The charges were deferred when Wright pled guilty to fourth degree assault charges. Police say they are not focused on those accusations and have not named any suspects.

Front porch murder trial deliberations begin

Jury deliberations are underway in the Renisha McBride murder trial.  The 19 year old woman was shot in the face when she knocked on Theodore Wafer’s door looking for help after she crashed her car.  The 55 year old airport maintenance worker says he was alone around 4:30 in the morning when he heard violent banging at the front and side door of his Michigan home.  When it didn’t stop Wafer claims he couldn’t find his cellphone to call 911 so he grabbed a shotgun, went to the front door, saw a faceless figure dart out of nowhere and pulled the trigger of what he claims he thought was an unloaded gun.  But it was loaded and the single gunshot wound killed Renisha.

In closing arguments the defense argued Wafer was terrified and shot in self-defense.  The prosecution said Wafer was angry and looking for a confrontation.  What will the jury decide?  It is second degree murder or a mistake?
