We had just finished getting poured on during our
Isaac reporting for Morning Express, and were not due back on the air until
Evening Express. Producer Alex Walker, photographer Jeremy Moorhead and I were absolutely starving, and every restaurant in the city we spotted was shuttered tighter than my water-logged wallet. The cookie from the hotel where we stayed had apparently worn off.
We started driving west towards the Garden District and finally found the only joint open for food in the whole area, "Slim Goodies," and a line was forming to get in. We parked, stowed our gear, and dodged traffic to get across the street. We waited on line for a few minutes when a lady yelled from behind the kitchen counter deep inside, "Grab a seat anywhere! Clean the table! And if you can't find a seat, then make new friends and join 'em!" It turns out she was the owner, Kappa Horn, and she was great.
