Report: Topical pain relievers causing burns

The Food and Drug Administration is reporting dozens of skin injuries from over-the-counter products, including creams, lotions, ointments and patches.

Topical pain relievers containing the active ingredients menthol, methyl salicylate and capsaicin can cause mild to severe burns, the FDA says. Brands included in the report were Flexall, Bengay, Capzasin, Icy Hot, and Metholatum.

So far this year, 2,636 cases of the West Nile virus have been reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including 118 deaths.

Last week, there were 1,993 total cases of the virus, with 87 deaths. Despite the 35% jump, federal health officials believe the worst part of the outbreak has passed. Numbers are expected to decline.

The Food and Drug Administration has unveiled the Counterfeit Detection Device #3 (CD3) this week,  to help fight in the ongoing battle of counterfeit products and packaging.

The hand-held device, that can emit 10 different wavelengths of light, is now being used in FDA laboratories, border crossings, mail facilities and import centers. Its cutting-edge technology is already analyzing nearly 100 counterfeit products including drugs like Viagra, Lipitor and Oxycontin.
