Tech IPOs: Where are they now???

Tech IPOs: Where are they now???

It only takes three simple words to describe the global phenomenon that’s teaching a lot people the acronym IPO: "The Social Network." Investors from Wall Street and Main Street allike are converging on Facebook’s highly-anticipated initial public stock offering, even though Main Street will likely walk away empty handed -- at first, anyway.

A lot of people who don’t know or care much about the nuts and bolts of investments are, for whatever reason, fascinated with this. But being a fan of Facebook doesn’t mean you have to be a fan of the IPO, and realistically most people won’t get the chance to participate. The initial public offering, expected to happen Friday, could value the social media giant at more than $104 billion, based on its newest estimated share price of $34 to $38. That would make Facebook the biggest tech company to go public in U.S. history. Maybe that’s why the IPO is getting so many “likes”?

Facebook IPO: Why now?

Facebook IPO: Why now?

Unless you’ve buried your head in the sand and then pulled a rock over it, you know the “who,” “what,” and “when”: Facebook is going public Friday. Where? The NASDAQ stock exchange, if you missed that bit. Now, for the “why.”

The company has given us plenty of time to prepare for this. Last May, Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg called an initial public offering “inevitable.” In February, Facebook filed paperwork for the IPO. But it’s getting real this week.

The hidden cost of traffic tickets

The hidden cost of traffic tickets

It’s never fun to get a ticket. From those blue lights flashing in your rear-view mirror, to the sick feeling in the pit of your stomach as you realize what’s happening, to the couple of minutes that seem like hours waiting for the police officer to approach your car, it’s just not a nice experience. And then you find out how much your indiscretion is going to cost you.

But paying the fine might just be the beginning of the bite out of your wallet. Depending on your insurer and your prior driving record, a ticket could cause a jump in your auto insurance premiums.

Perfect time to be a first-time home buyer?

Perfect time to be a first-time home buyer?

The housing market has been both an exciting and frightening whirlwind for the past few years, depending on your role and financial stake in the matter. As prices have continued to fall -- amidst historically low mortgage rates -- a lot of potential first-time homebuyers are wondering if it’s a good time to jump into the market. According to economists, there are two sides to consider.

Some would say the timing is just right. Homes are more affordable than they have been in a long time and in many cases your mortgage payment could be less than a monthly rent check. It may take a few more years for the housing market to get completely back to normal, and that means there are plenty of opportunities to capitalize on today, according to Eric Lascelles, chief economist at money-management firm RBC Global Asset Management Inc.

A little customer service can go a long way!  All four of the major wireless carriers are now pretty much even regarding how they’re satisfying their subscribers.

The American Customer Satisfaction Index scored Sprint, AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA within two points of each other on a 100-point scale that measures customer satisfaction. They haven’t had scores that close together since the survey began looking at all four companies back in 2005.

Student loan rates set to rise

Student loan rates set to rise

Future student borrowers should go ahead and get used to a tight budget, because if you thought paying for college couldn’t get any worse, well, think again. College is getting even more expensive next year and when high school seniors come down from their cloud of graduation celebrations, that fresh sense of freedom will have a whole new meaning – debt.

If Congress fails to act before July 1, interest rates on federal student loans will jump to 6.8% for the 2012-13 school year. Those rates have been temporarily held at 3.4% and require action by Congress to keep them from doubling.
