This gem of a clip is from a 1985 episode of “All My Children,” where Erica Kane has to fight off a grizzly bear after escaping a kidnapping. How does she do it? Why, by telling the bear what to do, of course! She calls him a “disgusting beast” and tells him he “may not do this,” because she is “Erica Kane!” Amazingly, (spoiler alert!) her tactic worked.

Syndicated talk show host Geraldo Rivera has experienced many dramatic moments on his show, but never a broken nose—until this episode. When a conversation between white supremacists, skinheads, black activists, and Jewish activists turned into an all-out brawl, Geraldo jumped in to break it up. After throwing a few punches himself, he ended up with a broken nose. The ratings—and maybe his medical bill—skyrocketed after this episode.

Journalist Katie Couric videotaped her entire colonoscopy procedure for the world to see. Despite being lightly sedated, she was able to communicate with her doctor, asking him lots of questions (as a true journalist does). At one point, she even says, “I have a pretty little colon!” Indeed, the doctor didn’t find any polyps or inflammation during the procedure. Researchers later dubbed the televised broadcast of her procedure “The Couric Effect” because it led to a 20% increase in colonoscopies.

Luke and Laura of “General Hospital” coined the term “supercouple.” Their wedding was one of the most anticipated and well-known soap opera events. True to soap opera form, the couple’s love created quite the controversy because Laura fell in love with Luke despite the fact that he raped her. Still, 30 million viewers tuned in to their wedding in 1981, making it the highest-rated episode in American soap opera history.

Marlena and John were another “supercouple” on the 1980s on “Days of Our Lives.” After a decade-long drama-filled romance, Marlena became possessed by a demon. Naturally, John, who conveniently believed he was a priest in a former life due to another character’s manipulations (and an extremely twisted story line), performed an exorcism to save his lover.

You can say Oprah Winfrey has been on a kind of diet rollercoaster, gaining and losing weight throughout her years as a TV talk show host. In this clip, she wheels out a barrow of her own fat (some speculated she lost weight for her longtime partner, Stedman). Today, Oprah admits that their image as a couple was part of her motivation to lose weight, but that the other part was becoming healthy.

Ah yes, the epic explosion at Erica Kane’s Mardi Gras Ball on “All My Children.” The explosion was part of Janet Dillon’s plot to get revenge on Pine Valley for treating her daughter badly. A loosened gas valve set off the explosion, killing Ethan Cambias as a result.

Check out Rosie O’Donnell and Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s heated political debate. In what was dubbed the best TV cat fight, the two argue about the U.S. war in Iraq during a “Hot Topics” segment of “The View.” No matter how hard their co-hosts try to break up the fight, the two women can’t seem to agree to disagree.

Tom Cruise had a big announcement to make on the Oprah Winfrey show: He was in love! To prove just how in love he was with now-wife Katie Holmes, the actor jumped on the couch, pounded his fist on the floor (is that a little ‘Tebowing’ action we see?) and hugged Oprah like there was no tomorrow. Even though the fans in the live audience were cheering to TomKat, Cruise’ performance left many fans scratching their heads.

The strong, self-assured Tyra Banks had something to say to her haters: “Kiss my fat ass!” That’s right, she wasn’t afraid to take on all the nasty comments she received after a few less-than-flattering photos surfaced of her in a bikini. So instead of starving herself (or jumping on the treadmill), the model-turned-TV-host walked out on the stage of her talk show in said bikini and defended herself in true Tyra fashion, shedding a tear and all.
