College students respond to Ferguson shooting

During a back-to-school meeting at Howard University this week, a group of students decided to take a picture to symbolize their feelings on current events in Ferguson, Missouri

Eighteen-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by police on Saturday in the St. Louis neighborhood. Witnesses contend Brown cooperated and placed his hands in the air, but the St. Louis County police chief says the teenager "physically assaulted" the officer and tried to grab his gun.

The Howard students were meeting to discuss freshman housing at the historically black college in Washington, D.C., according to Twitter user Megan Sims

Howard University, in a Facebook post Thursday, said that it was "proud of our students who have united peacefully to show they will not stand for the senseless violence anymore. Thank you to the Howard University Student Association for leading and organizing this display of solidarity."

Sims said on Twitter that the students decided "they needed to respond to the Mike Brown issue." So, they took a picture of themselves with their hands up.
