A mother and father died Saturday after they fell from a cliff while taking a selfie, according to investigators in Cabo de Roca, Portugal, where the Polish couple was vacationing with their two young children.
Local authorities suspect the couple went past a barrier intended to keep people away from the edge of the 250-foot cliff. The spot outside Lisbon is a popular tourist attractionand is considered the western-most point in Europe.
A Polish newspaper reportsthat the pair's 5- and 6-year-old children witnessed their parents' tragic fall. They were taken into Polish custody soon afterward and have received psychological counseling. The children are expected to return to Poland, where they will be reunited with family members.
Initial attempts to recover the victims' bodies had to be suspended until Sunday due to rough conditions and high tides. The family had reportedlybeen living in Portugal for the last few years.
