Slain mom’s family: We want justice

  • Sarah Goode’s body was found in a wooded area one mile from her home
  • Goode had been beaten and raped
  • Dante Taylor is facing two counts of first degree murder, one count of second degree murder, and one count of attempted rape

When 21-year old single mother Sarah Goode vanished after leaving a friend’s house in Shirley, New York on June 7, her close-knit family immediately feared something terrible had happened. Her phone repeatedly went directly to voicemail, which was unheard of for the young mother of 4-year-old Jocelyn.

“We knew something was wrong, because she always has her phone on her,” Florencia DeMuria, Goode’s sister-in-law, said.

Five days later volunteer searchers found Sarah’s body in a wooded area near her home in Medford, New York.

Now Dante Taylor, an ex-marine from Mastic, New York, has been charged with her murder.

At a hearing July 12, Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Janet Albertson said that Goode had been beaten and raped, and a piece of metal was found embedded in her skull, News 12 Long Island reported.  Albertson also said evidence including a palm print, blood and cell phone records tied Taylor to Goode’s murder.

“It was so shocking, we were in disbelief,” DeMuria told HLN, after hearing the Prosecutor describe how Goode was murdered. “The fact that a human being could do something so terrible...”

“We took solace in the fact that we were finally going to get some answers, but it was devastating to hear what happened to her,” DeMuria said.

At a hearing on June 24, Taylor was charged with two counts of first degree murder, one count of murder in the second degree and one count of attempted rape in the first degree for an unrelated case. He pled not guilty.

If convicted Taylor faces life in prison.

“One of the first things the Judge will tell the jury is that the indictment is not evidence. We haven't seen any evidence. It is important not to pre-judge this case. Dante comes from a very supportive family and he will receive the strong defense he is entitled to,” Taylor’s attorney, William Petrillo, told HLN.

“We all loved her so much and Dante Taylor took her away from us. He deserves nothing less than life in prison. He will do this again,” said DeMuria.  “We will show up for every court date. Even if we don’t need to be there, even if we have to stand outside. Until we get justice for Sarah we will be there.”
