Concentration camp selfie: SMH or NBD?

Stop us if you've heard this one before: A young person posted something questionable on the Internet. In this instance, that person was Breanna Mitchell, and the questionable something was a smiling selfie, taken June 20 on the grounds of Auschwitz, the largest and most infamous Nazi death camp.

Some people got pretty upset about it, and the picture has been retweeted more than 4,000 times. Most of the replies criticizing her cited the snap as disrespectful and tone-deaf.

Now, here's where the story takes a turn: It's nothing new for a person to post something strange, then delete it or hide behind the wall of the Internet. But Mitchell chose to defend her picture, saying she was happy to be there because she had always wanted to go with her father, who passed away.

As ire over the picture mounted, she kept replying, ridiculing people for getting angry and marveling at how much attention the pic had gotten.

Apparently, she isn't alone. Mitchell's timeline is full of RTs of positive messages from supporters who think the picture isn't really that big of a deal. Their general argument? There was a reason behind the smile, and she didn't mean to offend anyone -- or deserve the anger of strangers.
