'He gunned it': Witnesses tweet SXSW crash

A man is in custody after he drove his car into a crowd at the SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas, killing two people early Thursday morning, according to authorities.

Police say officers tried to pull the man over for drunken driving and he sped off, then plowed into a crowd. Officials from the University Medical Center Brackenridge Emergency Department said the driver has been released from hospital to investigators. At least 23 people were injured, and hospital officials say a majority of the victims are in their 20s.

Musicians scheduled to perform at the festival tweeted about the accident, telling fans about show cancellations and expressing condolences.

Tyler the Creator, who was supposed to be a headliner at the festival, tweeted, "Show Isnt Happening, Something Sad Happened. I'm Bummed." (His Twitter handle includes expletives that we cannot print.)

Other musicians, witnesses, reporters and even lawmakers also used Twitter to get the information out and to express thoughts on the tragedy.
