Military dog seized by Taliban, held as a hostage

The Taliban has distributed video showing off its latest hostage: A military dog, held on a tight leash and clad in an elaborate harness.

The Belgian Malinois was captured in Afghanistan last December during a firefight between coalition forces and Taliban, according to Zabiullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman who talked with the Washington Post.

Mujahid told the Post the dog was "of high significance to Americans." A military official told CNN Thursday that the dog isn't from the United States, contrary to the Taliban's claims, but rather belongs to the British.

The official declined to go on record because it is the policy of the NATO alliance that each country makes its own announcement about its situation.
