Police chipped in to help a Tampa, Florida, family celebrate Christmas after thieves tried to ruin the special day.
Police say someone broke into Melody Russell’s home Monday and stole presents meant for her children, ages 7 and 5.
Authorities say the thieves may have also taken the family's puppy, a Shih Tzu named Honey.
“When the officer met with the victim, she was crying profusely. You could tell she was very heartbroken … single mom … working,” Tampa police spokeswoman Yvette Flynn told HLN affiliate WTSP. “Those are our kids, those are our families, and that last thing we want is for a family to go without gifts during Christmas.”
Members of Tampa Police Squad 204 stepped in and bought new presents for the children and delivered them to the family.
“I didn’t know how the kids were going to have a Christmas with the gifts being gone,” said Melody Russell told WTSP.
Tampa police are still looking for the thieves and Honey.
