Did Colin Farrell and Elizabeth Taylor have a romantic relationship before she died in 2011 at the age of 79? If you asked Farrell, he'd say absolutely.
The Irish actor revealed the shocking information to Ellen DeGeneres on her show Monday, admitting that he and Taylor became close in 2009 after he met her entourage at the hospital where his son was being born. Taylor was having a stent put in her heart at the same time.
"I said, 'Will you tell her I said hello? She probably won't know who I am,'" he said of running into Taylor's manager. "And they go, 'No, she knows who you are.' And I went, 'Wow, cool. Well, tell her I said hello and I wish her the best,' and they said, 'Will do.'"
Farrell, 37, recounts that after the encounter, he wanted to send the legendary actress flowers, and received the news that Taylor had also sent him an orchid for his kindness.
A week later, Farrell says he visited her. "And that was the beginning of a year and a half or two years of what was a really cool [relationship]. It was kind of like the last -- it feels like in my head, not hers, I'm projecting -- but the last kind of romantic relationship I had," the actor admitted.
Farrell says the pair would often have late-night phone calls that lasted for hours at a time, but he wants to make one thing clear: The relationship "was never consummated."
"I just adored her," Farrell gushed. The actor is one of the few non-family members who was invited to her funeral in 2011 and even read a poem during the service. "She was a spectacular, spectacular woman. I wanted to be [husband] number eight, but we ran out of road."
