A Connecticut father of three is suspected of drugging his 14-year-old daughter with Benadryl in order to have sex with her 12-year-old friend, according to a police affidavit.
Robert Chesters, 42, was arrested September 11 on charges of first-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor.
Court documents state Chesters and the 12-year-old victim began having a relationship in August after the victim had a sleepover at his Lebanon home with his young daughter.
The police affidavit revealed sexually charged text messages allegedly from Chesters to the victim found on the girl’s phone, suggesting Chesters was giving his daughter Benadryl to get her to sleep so he could be alone with the victim.
“I am so lost without you :-( [name redacted] is gone next weekend And [name redacted] will have Benadryl so you can lay with me comfortably and love me,” one text from Chesters to the girl on September 8 read.
Authorities were made aware of the case after several students reported to a school guidance counselor that their friend, the victim, was involved in a sexual relationship with an older male. The guidance counselor reported the meeting to the school principal, who later spoke with the victim, at which time he viewed the text messages in her phone from Chesters and confirmed they were sexual in nature, according to police.
“I won’t lie I do enjoy making love to you. Laying in your arms is the most special thing I have ever felt. Other than you know…(blush) I feel truly blessed to have you in my life and in my arms and in my heart,” another text from Chesters to the girl on September 8 read.
Authorities also say Chesters sent a picture of himself to the victim along with a text message that read: “I know it is a horrible picture and I’m sorry. I love you will all of my heart. Forever yours Bob,” according to the affidavit.
In a written statement to police, authorities say Chesters told them he and victim started “texting back and forth over the last few months, and the texts eventually escalated in an emotional as well as a sexual nature,” according to the affidavit.
However, police say Chesters told them that he was never involved in a sexual relationship with the victim, and added he considered the victim like “another daughter, a friend, and a confidant.”
During an interview with the victim, authorities say the 12-year-old girl disclosed that she had sexual intercourse with Chesters, and that their sexual relationship began in August.
Authorities say the victim told them that she would sleepover Chesters house in order to spend time with his daughter. However, she said during a sleepover in August, she had sex with Chesters for the first time, and that she was a virgin before having sex with him, according to police.
“During the incident, the victim was in [Chesters] bedroom sitting on the bed when he began to kiss and hug her,” the girl told police, according to the affidavit. “Bob then took the victim’s clothes off, after which they had vaginal intercourse.”
Police added the 12-year-old girl told them Chesters never used a condom, and told her that he had a vasectomy so she couldn’t get pregnant.
The victim also told to authorities that Chester “would give his 14 year old daughter Benadryl for her allergies to help her sleep,” the affidavit states. Chester would then “have sex with the victim while is daughter was sleeping,” police said.
During one of their conversations, the 12-year-old girl told police that Chesters mentioned to her that if “people found out about the relationship, he could go away for 10 years,” according to the affidavit.
On the day of his arrest, authorities found Chesters sitting in the front driver’s seat of his pickup truck in the driveway of his home. Police say he was discovered by his 16-year-old son, who told authorities that his father had been extremely depressed since finding out he was suspected of sexually assaulting his daughter’s 12-year-old friend. He was taken to the area hospital and then transported to Corrigan-Radkowski Correctional Center.
The affidavit states Chesters’ 16-year-old son also discovered a crumpled up, unfinished note on the floor of his pickup truck that read:
“My dearest: (the note was address to his children), I am sorry for any embarrassment I may have caused any of you. I need all 3 of you to know how much I love you all and always have. As have probably realized I miss mommy in a major way and I want to spend eternity with her and I hope I soon will. However as you have probably figured out I fell in love with the victim. I know it was wrong of me and I hope you will forgive me for embarrassing you. I am not sure how it happened but it did. As wrong as it is/was I did love her a lot. However…”
If convicted of the charges, Chesters faces a maximum sentence of 25 years. He remains in police custody on a $500,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 21.
Chesters has pleaded not guilty to both charges. Multiple calls to his defense attorney Peter Scillieri were not returned.
