When 25-year-old actress Julianne Hough decided to dress as her favorite character from the Netflix series, "Orange is the New Black," for a Beverly Hills party Friday night, she never thought it would cause a stir.
But when Hough showed up as Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren, a character played by actress Uzo Aduba, the former "Dancing With The Stars" pro recreated the look by wearing an orange jumpsuit, her hair in knots and her skin covered in dark makeup.
The look has long been referred to as "blackface," and began as a trend in American theater in the 19th century.
Hough's costume choice has elicited a swift reaction on Twitter, mostly negative.

However, Hough had a few supporters speak out as well.
Usually people donning black face are making fun, or teasing. I think she genuinely wanted to dress like this character she loves.

@juliannehough need to go read the history of black face. This is not it! You did nothing racist.

Hough updated her Twitter with an apology, although she garnered a lot of flak for that too.
"I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize," she wrote.
