The man accused of randomly killing a San Francisco State University student pleaded not guilty last week to a murder charge.
Justin Valdez, 20, died after allegedly being shot by 30-year-old Nikhom Thephakaysone in San Francisco on September 23.
HLN affiliate KRON reports surveillance video from a light-rail vehicle shows the suspect and victim standing on the train with “no hint of familiarity between the two,” the Assistant District Attorney Scot Clark explained.
Although Thephakaysone’s gun appeared to be in plain sight at times, the prosecutor said passengers on the vehicle were “completely unaware and absorbed with their electronic devices.”
Thephakaysone pleaded not guilty to three charges -- murder with a gun enhancement, assault with a firearm on another individual that night and possession of an illegal assault rifle recovered from his home.
A judge placed Thephakaysone on a no-bail status. His next court date for a preliminary hearing is November 20.
