A Louisiana pastor was shot and killed during a church service on Friday.
Pastor Ronald Harris was preaching at the Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center around 8:20 p.m. when police said he was shot twice by 53-year-old Woodrow Karey. Calcasieu Parish Chief Deputy Stitch Guillory said Sunday on CNN New Day that Karey is a deacon at the church.
Guillory said there were 50 to 60 people in the church at the time of the shooting.
"These people thought they were going to church to hear a message from God. Instead, they witnessed a pastor being gunned down in the middle of the service by the deacon," Guillory said.
Karey left the church and later called 911, admitting to shooting Harris, according to Kim Myers, spokeswoman for the Calcasieu Parish sheriff department.
Myers said Karey surrendered to authorities and later charged with second-degree murder. He is currently being held on $1 million bond.
Authorities say the motive for the killing is not yet known, but Guillory said the investigation "involves issues that occurred at the church."
