Everyone has something to say about Miley Cyrus recently -- from Robin Thicke's mom Gloria Loring to Cher -- but now the "Wrecking Ball" star's dad is adding his own 2 cents -- and he's defending Miley.

In an interview on "Piers Morgan Live" Thursday, Billy Ray Cyrus explained that his daughter is simply staying true to herself. "She's just Miley," he told CNN's Morgan.

"She's an artist. She's real," he explained. "I think that what's happened over the years, Miley has been reinventing her sound. She's evolving as an artist herself. I think that all of what everyone is calling controversy now, that's still my Miley."

Following a controversial VMAs performance weeks ago, Billy Ray says that while there may be growing pains regarding his daughter's career, Miley knows exactly what she's doing. "Miley's smart enough to know that to come out of the shadows of 'Hannah Montana,' it really takes something extremely drastic," he explained.

In response to her provocative wardrobe and dancing during the now-infamous performance, Billy Ray said that "she could’ve went out and sang the song in a flannel shirt and a pair of jeans, and it would have still been just as strong. Would we have been here talking about it? No way."

Billy Ray acknowledged the criticism against his daughter by adding that "when you go to that level, it creates passion, and passion is either love or hate. But there's no middle of the road for passion."

Miley's latest single "Wrecking Ball" became the No. 1 song on Billboard's Hot 100 with the suggestive music video quickly becoming a smash, hitting over 19 million views on VEVO in 24 hours.
