Authorities have yet to disclose possible motives for Aaron Alexis' deadly shooting rampage at the headquarters for Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington D.C. Monday.

But on Wednesday, Cathleen Alexis, the shooter’s mother, made her first statement about the incident via audio recording, expressing how sorry she felt for the victims’ families.

In part, she said, "His actions have had a profound and everlasting effect on the families of the victims. I don't know why he did what he did, and I'll never be able to ask him why. Aaron is now in a place where he can no longer do harm to anyone, and for that I am glad."

She added, "To the families of the victims, I am so, so very sorry that this has happened. My heart is broken."

Bishop Gerald Seabrooks read the statement to media gathered outside her Brooklyn, New York home. He later told HLN’s Dr. Drew how much of an impact the tragedy is having on her, saying that she is "under a tremendous amount of grief."

“[She is] suffering from insomnia," he continued. "She's not able to sleep right now and thinking about the victims and their families -- hopefully, that they will accept her condolences and sympathy for the loss of their loved ones.”

Officials say Alexis is solely responsible for fatally shooting 12 people at the Navy Yard.  In addition to those killed, he left eight wounded.  Alexis was also killed during the rampage.
