An Arizona mother is in custody Monday after police say she allegedly killed her two children.
Marilyn Edge, 42, was arrested and booked on two counts of alleged murder after her 13-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter were found dead in a Santa Ana, California, hotel room.
Santa Ana police were alerted to the children's location after Edge crashed her car Saturday night in an apparent suicide attempt in nearby Costa Mesa.
Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna told reporters at a news conference that Edge tried to crash into an electrical box and had a propane tank in the car.
The car was stopped by metal posts before it could hit the electrical box. When police arrived, they found the woman with a cord wrapped around her neck. Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Tim Starn said she was trying to strangle herself.
The paramedics who responded to the crash were able to pull Edge from the car and said she told them about her children. They called Santa Ana police to check the hotel. "She was specific about the crime and she was specific about the location. That's why we got the call," Bertagna said.
Police have yet to disclose how the children were killed.
Edge is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.
