Did local handyman abduct girl on first day of school?

Authorities say 12-year-old Missouri girl Adriaunna Horton was sexually assaulted and strangled to death after she was abducted from a local park on her first day of school, according to a probable cause statement released by the Barton County Sheriff’s Office.

Bobby Bourne Jr., 34, is charged with first-degree murder, forcible rape, and statutory rape in addition to the felony child kidnapping charge that was filed against him before the missing girl’s body was discovered on August 21.

Authorities say Horton was playing at Hazel’s Park on August 19 with her little sisters and two friends when she was last seen climbing into the suspect’s blue 1998 Ford Expedition.

Horton’s sisters ran to their grandfather’s home and told him that their sister had left the park with the suspect, according to police. She was reported missing around 5:22 p.m.

Bourne Jr. was pulled over during a traffic stop around two hours later, but there was no sign of the missing girl.

Police say the suspect denied picking the girl up and said he had no knowledge as to her whereabouts. He was subsequently arrested and charged with her kidnapping.

After his arrest, court documents state during an interview with police Bourne Jr. admitted to picking Horton up at the park and stated that he drove her to an abandoned residence in Golden City where he questioned her about the whereabouts of her father.

“Bourne claimed Horton ran away from him, fell down, and died as a result of falling,” police said in the probable cause statement.

Court documents further revealed the suspect led investigators to the wooded area southeast of Golden City where Horton’s body was discovered by law enforcement on August 21.

“Based on observations made of Horton’ body there is evidence that she was sexually assaulted,” police said in the probable cause statement. “During a subsequent autopsy, the cause of Horton’s death was determined to be strangulation.”

Bourne Jr. is currently being held at the Jasper County Jail on $2 million bond.

His defense attorney, Alex Reiter, didn’t respond to a HLN’s calls seeking a comment.
