'David After Dentist': Raising a viral kid
David Devore and family

Editor's note: "Generation Overshare" is a series about the blurred lines between what we share online and what we keep private. All week, HLN brings you content that examines the impact of putting it all out there, especially for a younger generation that's growing up on social media.

David DeVore is the father of David DeVore Jr., the star of “David After Dentist.” He posted a video of his son’s reaction to anesthesia after getting dental surgery, and the video went viral, acquiring more than 120 million views. Devore is an entrepreneur and stay-at-home dad. He is on Twitter.

In February 2009, I posted a video of my son after a dentist visit for a minor procedure to remove an extra tooth. On a whim, I decided to videotape the day's events to share with David’s mom, who couldn’t be there due to work.

I had no idea what an impact posting that video would have on our family, even four years later.

The viral video has taken us all over the country and even abroad. We have been to New York City and Los Angeles for television appearances, Boston to share our experiences with students and academics at MIT, and even all the way to Brazil, where David and I got to ride in a limo and learn to speak a little Portuguese.

It has been a highlight of my life to be able to share this experience with David, as well as my wife and younger son, William. We have been able to do things we would never have had a chance to had it not been for the video.

I couldn't have asked for a better kid in David. He is a great son and a wonderful big brother to William. He is an honor student and has a strong faith in God. The two came together recently when an anti-drug essay he wrote was awarded the grand prize among all entries from the Seminole County schools in Florida. David wrote about the dangers of drugs and how faith in God can help a person stay away from them. His essay was the only one printed on a calendar that was distributed to 30,000 students in the area.

He is also a great athlete. He particularly enjoys tackle football and lacrosse. While he has many favorite players, the most influential one has been Tim Tebow. As you can see from the video, we are huge Florida Gator fans and have followed Tebow from his college career. David has even read his book and was impressed with his commitment not to drink soda -- so much so that David has not had a soda since August 2011. That's something I am very proud of but haven’t been able to do myself!

David is such a special kid — there is something about him that says this kid is going to make something of himself. Having said that, he has done all I could have ever wanted just by being my son.
