Producer: Hey Lynn, we have an assignment for you.
Me: Great! Whatcha thinking?
Producer: We're thinking you feed the biggest shark in the world from a raft that a tiny bee could puncture and sink.
Me: Um, where’s the nearest emergency exit?
Ok, it didn't go exactly like that but that's how it happened in my head. You see, I’m terrified of sharks. Little sharks, big sharks…largest sharks in the world same difference…terrified. So, the intrepid reporter that I am set aside my fears and dove into the assignment head-first (pun intended).
It was an experience I can only describe as terrifyingly beautiful. Whale sharks do not eat people…let me get that out of the way. They are enormous. Trixie is 25 feet long and 5,000 pounds and she’ll nearly double in size. Scary yes, but she was so incredibly sweet and I swear she smiled while we dropped a bucket of shrimp and squid into her mouth the size of our raft. You have to see it, tune in this weekend for a look at all things shark from the Georgia Aquarium’s Ocean Voyager exhibit. It’s really cool!
Also in the cool department, look who hit the Weekend Express couch -- the one and only Forest Whitaker!! The award-winning actor and director Lee Daniels will give you a glimpse inside the making of "The Butler," the story of Eugene Allen, a White House butler who served under eight U.S. presidents in a pivotal time in history from the Civil Rights Movement to Vietnam. Daniels reveals how he discovered Allen’s remarkable life story and how Whitaker prepared to take on such a remarkable man.
“Dr. Drain” will also be on the couch. The summer hoops sensation tells us about his newfound fame starring in the latest Blake Griffin commercial. We’ll talk hoops, celebrity and, of course, super fly glasses.
Finally, good news for all you Weekend Express fans! Natasha is back next weekend from a well-deserved vacation. I’ve had a blast hanging out with you the last few weeks and a special shoutout to the awesome WXP team, seriously they are the best (see black licorice, my favorite: gift courtesy of Mak Bowker, web guru and the best, even though she’s an OU Bobcat).
Weekend Express has those stories and of course your top headlines, sports and weather.
See you Saturday and Sunday bright and early!
