Watch HLN’s newest hit show "HLN After Dark" nightly at 10 p.m. on HLN. Our all-star legal team breaks down the George Zimmerman murder trial and the issues heating up in the court of public opinion.
Jury selection is underway in the George Zimmerman murder trial in Seminole County, Florida. Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder for killing Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26, 2012. Zimmerman says he shot 17-year-old Martin in self-defense.
Jury selection can be significant in any trial, but the process could be especially important in this case since the killing of Martin has captured a lot of attention between the time when the incident occurred and the start of the trial. This case has brought to light a variety of issues including race, gun ownership and racial profiling. Rallies, protests and even Internet fundraising events have sprung from interest surrounding this case. All of these factors play into why the jury selection process is so important.
In an effort to ensure a fair trail, each potential juror is required to fill out a questionnaire that gives both the defense and the prosecution some insight into the particular person's background, views and knowledge of the case. Although these specific questions are not released to the public, to give you a better idea of the types of things attorneys want to know, our team of legal experts provided some suggested questions that they think would be similar to the ones asked in this case. This sample questionnaire is not as comprehensive as the real one, but it gives you an idea of how the process works and what's involved for potential jurors.
