Hofstra student killed by police in home invasion

Police now say a Hofstra University student held at gunpoint by a home intruder was fatally shot by a police officer, authorities said Saturday.

Authorities say Dalton Smith broke into Andrea Rebello's apartment Friday morning. When an officer arrived at the scene, police said Smith was holding Rebello in a headlock and had a gun pointed at her head, threatening to shoot her. Police said Smith then pointed the gun at the officer.

According to authorities, the officer fired eight shots. Seven shots hit Smith, but Rebello was shot once in the head. Both Smith and Rebello died from their injuries.

Hofstra University held a moment of silence Sunday during graduation ceremonies to remember Rebello.

Police say at the time of the shooting, Smith was wanted for jumping parole. Authorities say Smith had an "extensive" arrest history.

Authorities have not identified the police officer. Officials say they will conduct an internal investigation into the shooting.
