Popular backup quarterback Tim Tebow has been waived by the New York Jets, the team announced Monday morning.
Tebow, a graduate of the University of Florida, was acquired by the Jets in a trade from Denver in March of 2012 and played in 12 games this past season.
“We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow,” said Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan. “Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped. Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason. We wish him the best moving forward.”
A first-round selection for the Broncos in 2010, Tebow is a career 173-of-361 passes for 2,422 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions, with 989 yards and 12 touchdowns on 197 rushes. He has started 16 of the 35 games in which he has played.
Despite his limited playing time with the Jets, Tebow has remained a popular -- if polarizing -- NFL figure.
He even inspired the Internet meme of "Tebowing," which involves having one's photo taken while down on one knee and apparently praying, sometimes in outlandish situations.
