BBQ & Facebook a natural combo? Ask this eatery!

  • Word spreads online after bridge construction threatens N.C. barbecue restaurant
  • Owner surprised that many people 'sitting around looking at Facebook'
BBQ & Facebook a natural combo? Ask this eatery!

Lexington, North Carolina, is one of those small, sleepy, rural towns where everybody knows somebody, a town where barbecue is king.

For 26 years, Lexington Style Trimmings has been serving barbecue and slaw to customers. But when a nearby bridge closed for construction, it made it difficult for customers to get to the restaurant.

Owner Mike Swing told HLN affiliate WFMY that he estimates he lost 40% of the eatery's business due to the bridge closing.

In an effort to spread the word about the restaurant's woes, one of Swing's employees posted the following on the eatery's Facebook page:

OK people listen up!!

We are doing all we can to stay open but you know this bridge closing is killing us!!

We (are) holding on by the skin of our nose and we don't want to close so please remember us when you are planning to grab a bite to eat!

The employee's post, which was shared 191 times on Facebook, had dozens of comments from patrons, with many asking what they could do to help.

"She did this behind my back," Swing told the station. "If she would have come and asked me, I would have said, 'No.' I'm glad she didn't ask."

When residents heard the restaurant was in trouble, they responded in droves. Now, Swing says, business is booming again, though it sounds like he's still not aware of the power of social media.

"I really know nothing about the Facebook deal. But, I will tell you this, it surprised me. I couldn't believe there are that many people sitting around looking at Facebook," he said.

Hopefully, Swing's comment won't get back to Mark Zuckerberg.

A few days after the original post, the restaurant posted the following on its Facebook page:

We would like to thank EVERYONE who has supported us this past week.

Never in a million years would we have imagined that one post would be shared by so many. And that so many would come by to show us the love or even try us for the first time.

It has been overwhelming to say the least. We are very humbled and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Hopefully we have reminded a few old friends that we are here and made a few new friends that will come back to see us.

Thank you once again and we hope to see you soon!!
