Coming out to parents can be a harrowing experience. There's always the chance they'll be blindsided. There's the even scarier chance they'll be mad. But maybe, just maybe, they've known all along.
The gay-allied clothing brand FCKH8 posted a sweet letter presumably from a father to his son, Nate. Apparently, Nate's dad had overheard him worrying on the phone over how he was going to come out to his family. Rather than prolong a stressful situation, Nate's dad decided to come clean: He knew, he had pretty much always known and everything is totally cool as long as he went to the store:
"I overheard your phone conversation with Mike last night about your plans to come out to me. The only thing I need you to plan is to bring home OJ and bread after class. We are out, like you now," the letter reads.
"I've known you were gay since you were six. I've loved you since you were born. -- Dad."
"P.S. Your mom and I think you and Mike make a cute couple."
Sob! That last "I've loved you" line is the kicker. This guy has a future writing nonchalant "We know you're gay" cards for Hallmark. Speaking of that, with all of the sweet letters and gestures we've been seeing of families celebrating their gay children, Hallmark should definitely start a "Coming Out" line.
You can thank us later, Hallmark. And maybe consider this letter for starters.
