Never too late: 106-year-old gets diploma

  • Ohio's 106-year-old Reba Williams finally will get her diploma
  • It was delayed because of assigned reading -- 56 years ago

Reba Williams' yearbook superlative probably would be "Best Centenarian." The Columbus, Ohio, resident may be the oldest person in the class of 2013. At 106 years old, Williams will finally receive her high school diploma.

Williams attended and completed coursework at Mount Vernon High School in Mount Vernon, Ohio, in the 1920's, but she never received a diploma, according to the Mansfield News Journal. The hiccup happened when Williams refused to read a book a teacher assigned.

"[Reba Williams] said the book was not worth reading and she'd already read it once and didn't like it and wasn't going to read it again," her daughter Lavata Williams told the publication.

The Mount Vernon Board of Education approved a motion this month to give Williams her diploma.

"It seemed like a nice thing to do and although I never knew her personally it seemed like something that was overdue," Fred Dailey told the Mansfield News Journal. Dailey's wife is the woman who asked to the school board to honor Williams with her diploma.

How she'll receive it hasn’t been finalized, but the Williams family already knows what they'll do with the certificate. Seventy-eight-year-old Lavata Williams said she'll frame it and place the certificate with her mother’s other valuables alongside her bed.
