Editor’s note: Melissa Rivers is the star of We TV’s “Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best.” For the 2012-13 awards season, the reality TV star has joined an awards fantasy league on BlockbusterAwards.com. Much like a sports fantasy league, Blockbuster’s site lets participants host their own pool, pick their Oscar winners, and compete with other league members.
HLN: How did your awards show fantasy league do at the Oscars?
Melissa Rivers: The league did great, but I didn’t even end up in the top 20! I got it right in all the major categories, but I really thought there would be an upset with "Silver Linings Playbook" over "Argo!"
HLN: Was "Silver Linings Playbook" the film you were rooting for?
MR: Yes. For Best Director, I picked David Russell. That film got four acting nominations — I think that has something to do with the director, so I thought the film would sweep the Oscars. But all my actors did well.
HLN: And Jennifer Lawrence took home the Oscar for Best Actress! What’s your formula for predicting winners correctly?
MR: You take the best dressed person going into the Academy Awards, which was Naomi Watts. Then you take the person who turned in the totally unexpected performance, which was Jessica Chastain. You merge the two together and what do you get? Jennifer Lawrence! It’s not scientific, but it works.
HLN: Were there any fan favorites that shocked you on BlockbusterAwards.com?
MR: Going into last night, Tommy Lee Jones was leading in Best Supporting Actor, and then it quickly switched to Christoph Waltz, who ended up winning. I thought it would be Christoph’s year (and I was right!). It was interesting to see how people were making their predictions online.
HLN: What was your favorite moment of the night?
MR: It was really entertaining! I especially loved the “Chicago-Dream Girls-Les Mis” performances!
HLN: Fashion is a big part of the Academy Awards — did you have a favorite dress?
MR: Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain. Both hit it right out of the park!
HLN: How did you decide to participate in BlockbusterAwards.com?
MR: I love competition. Last night, it was so much fun following along with the awards because you’re competing with so many people and it makes it so much more fun. We’re such a technologically advanced society now — I love that so many people joined in.
HLN: Will you be participating in the fantasy league again next year?
MR: I would love to participate again next year! But next time, I’d love to follow the entire awards show season, starting with the Golden Globes.
