Yahoo CEO: Work at the office or quit

Yahoo employees can no longer work at home, says CEO Marissa Mayer. The note came Friday afternoon from the company’s HR department. Employees have until June to comply or leave the company.

“To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important, so we need to be working side-by-side. That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices,” the memo, obtained by Kara Swisher on, states.

A source close to the situation told the Business Insider that part of the reason for the directive is to trim some fat and weed out employees who aren’t being productive. Several hundred employees will be impacted, according to

“Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home," according to the Yahoo statement. Huffington Post Senior Columnist, Lisa Belkin, calls that a 40 year old, outdated argument. “Rather than championing a blending of life and work, she is calling for an enforced and antiquated division,” Belkin wrote.

Mayer also caused controversy before stepping into her new role at Yahoo when she announced she would only take two weeks of maternity leave.
