As the nation mourns Mindy McCready’s tragic passing, there is another sad part of this story that lives on -- her two young sons.
Right now, 6-year-old Zander and 10-month-old Zayne are in foster care, but they have been a part of their mother’s tumultuous life.
In 2005, McCready became pregnant with her first son, Zander, with then-boyfriend Billy McKnight. Later that same year during her pregnancy, McCready was hospitalized for a drug overdose. Authorities would describe the overdose as an attempted suicide. This incident was followed by years of run-ins with the law and public battles with drugs and alcohol. McCready's mother was eventually given temporary custody of Zander.
In 2011, McCready tried to regain full custody of Zander from her mother. In November, McCready took Zander from her mother’s home in Florida, resulting in Zander being officially named a missing person. In December, a judge issued an emergency “pick up” order after McCready traveled to Arkansas with the child. When authorities found McCready and her then-5-year-old son, they were hiding in a closet.
In April 2012, McCready and record producer David Wilson welcomed a son, Zayne. Plus, McCready regained custody of Zander by the end of the year.
Life together as a family would be short-lived. Last month, McCready’s boyfriend David Wilson died of a reported suicide from a gunshot wound. On February 6, McCready’s two sons were placed in foster care and McCready entered a court-ordered rehabilitation.
On Sunday, McCready was found dead on the front porch of her Arkansas home, an apparent victim, according to authorities, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. She was 37.
