Authorities will not confirm if fugitive ex-cop Chris Dorner is dead. However,  they found charred human remains late Tuesday in a smoldering cabin where it's believed he was holed up.

Investigators still have to identify the remains, and they said the process could take days.

The drama started around 12:22 p.m. local time (3:22 p.m. ET) when San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies got a call from two cleaning workers at a cabin. They said they'd been tied up and their car had been stolen. Authorities immediately set up a roadblock.

About 20 minutes later, wardens with California Fish and Wildlife spotted a man fitting Dorner's description driving in the opposite direction. As the driver tried to get away, hundreds of rounds of gunfire were exchanged. 

Next, the suspect escaped into the mountainous forest, where he holed up inside a cabin near Big Bear Lake, California. Authorities quickly surrounded the cabin and more gunfire broke out.

During the standoff, two sheriff's deputies were shot during the standoff. One of those deputies died from his injuries.  

Finally, around 4:30 p.m. local time (7:30 p.m. ET), the cabin caught fire after police tossed smoke devices inside.
