In a press conference Tuesday night, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman refuted reports that a body believed to be that of fugitive ex-cop Christopher Dorner was found in a burning cabin in the Big Bear, California, area, saying that the cabin was still on fire and too hot to search.

CNN learned Tuesday that a SWAT team had entered the cabin, where a man believed to be Dorner was holed up. Officials told CNN that smoke devices were used inside the cabin, and the cabin was subsequently engulfed in flames.

Authorities responded Thursday to a report that a vehicle was stolen by a suspect matching Dorner's description. According to law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation, the suspect is Dorner.

Authorities say Dorner ditched the vehicle near a roadblock, fled into the forest and barricaded himself inside a cabin. It is not known if Dorner had any hostages in the cabin.

Two deputies were shot during an exchange of gunfire with Dorner Tuesday. According to HLN affiliates and the Los Angeles Times, one of the deputies died after the shootout.

Schools in the Big Bear area were briefly placed on lockdown.

At a press conference, LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith called on Dorner to surrender.

"It's time to turn yourself in. It's time to end the bloodshed," he said.

The LAPD says Dorner killed three people, including one officer. They say on February 3, Dorner killed a woman and her fiance in their car in Irvine, California. The woman was the daughter of a retired cop who handled Dorner's appeal after he was fired from the force.

Police say Dorner then shot and wounded an officer in Corona, about 100 miles away, on February 7. Later that day, Dorner allegedly ambushed and shot two officers at a stoplight in Riverside, killing one of them. Dorner's burned-out truck was found in Big Bear last week.

Dorner posted an 11-page manifesto online, promising a "war" on police and their families for being fired in 2008. In it he warns, "I will bring unconventional and asymmetrical warfare to those in LAPD uniform whether on or off duty."
