These days, divorces seem to be a dime a dozen for celebs and everyday people. So when you hear that a Connecticut couple has managed to stay married for more than 80 years, it's the kind of thing that makes you sit up and take notice.
HLN affiliate WTNH reports that John and Ann Betar hold the record for the longest marriage in the United States. They tied the knot in 1932, but almost missed their chance because Ann's parents had arranged for her to marry someone else. The couple eloped in order to end up together.
"They said it wouldn't last," John told WTNH, laughing.
John and Ann, now 101 and 97 years old, respectively, have a large family to share their joy with. In addition to five children, they also have 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
When asked what the secret to their long marriage has been, John said that "contentment" was at the heart of their union, calling his wife a "great cook and a great mother." Ann said, "Your love grows, you know. And it grows in very good directions for the two of us."
The baker who created their anniversary cake was confused when asked to write "80 years" on it, thinking that the couple was celebrating a birthday rather than their 80th anniversary. Guess he doesn't hear that one every day.
