George Zimmerman’s defense team wants to delay the start of their client's trial, which is scheduled for June 10.

In a motion filed Wednesday, Zimmerman's legal team cites the prosecution’s “formalistic approach” to providing discovery as one of the reasons it needs more time to prepare for the trial. It says the “formalities” that the prosecution is demanding has caused the defense to waste “hundreds of hours.”

The court document lists several examples of the prosecution's “formalistic approach,” including not handing over “identifying information” for Trayvon Martin and "Witness 8" so the defense could subpoena their social media accounts. Witness 8 is Martin's girlfriend, who purportedly heard -- via cell phone call -- the last moments of his life before he was shot and killed.

The defense also says in the motion that the prosecution had Martin’s cell phone analyzed without telling Zimmerman’s attorneys.

Attorneys are scheduled to argue the motion requesting a delay and other motions on February 5.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to a second-degree murder charge for shooting Martin on February 26. Martin was returning from a convenience store and was unarmed. Zimmerman told police he shot the teen in self-defense.
