SAG Awards set the stage for Oscar

NEED TO KNOW
  • Screen Actors Guild awards are voted on by actors only
  • Several Golden Globe winners also took home 'Actor' statues
SAG Awards set the stage for Oscar

It's the award given to actors BY actors.

The 19th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were handed out Sunday night in Los Angeles, and there weren't a lot of surprises. In fact, if you didn't know better, you might think you were watching a Golden Globes replay.

Daniel Day-Lewis, Jennifer Lawrence, Julianne Moore, Claire Danes, Kevin Costner and Anne Hathaway all added "Actor" statues to sit alongside their Globes.

Twin wins for Day-Lewis could bode well for his chance at Oscar gold in February. Last year Jean Dujardin won the Globe and the SAG award for his role in "The Artist" and went on to win biggest prize.

Because the SAG Award is given for achievements in performance only (rather than writing or directing) there are no Best Picture or Screenplay awards. But in a close comparison to its win for best motion picture in the drama category at the Globes, the actors in the movie "Argo" took home the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

As a member of that cast, Brian Cranston was awarded his first statue of the night. Later he would thank the audience for "endowing" him with another statue for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for his role in the TV show 'Breaking Bad.'

The cast of "Modern Family" matched its wins at the Golden Globes in 2010, 2011 and 2012 by taking home the the award for their performance as an ensemble in a comedy series three years running!
